SBS Diversity Talent Escalator Expression of Interest

About the Program

The SBS Diversity Talent Escalator, a new national initiative focused on increasing the representation of Australia’s diverse communities within the television production sector.

The co-funded initiative sees SBS and the screen agencies including Screen Territory, collaborate with program producers to secure flexible, on-the-job, paid learning and immersion opportunities that span across SBS’s commissioned content slate, from documentary and factual entertainment to food, comedy and drama.

The scheme aims to assist with providing career development opportunities for emerging screen practitioners and freelancers from different backgrounds, providing clear pathways for progression at all levels.

Screen Territory and SBS are currently looking to fill a role on a documentary production which is shooting on the Cocos Islands.

The Role

The position is a Trainee Producer’s/Director’s Assistant.

Position Description, Skills and Experience Required

The Person:

The ideal person will have an outgoing personality and be self-motivated. 
Whilst there will be times when they are fully occupied and need to be on the ball, there are also down times when they will be thrown back on their own resources.  This is an isolated community and they will need to be able to fit in.

General  Administration Skills:

Intermediate computer skills: Demonstrated experience using Word, Excel, Scanning, emailing, printing
People organisation skills: able to communicate with a wide variety of people, organise interview times, convey information
Administration coordination skills: collecting and checking release forms and other paperwork, good eye for detail, physically fit, ability to lift and move camera equipment, tripods, etc. Current Drivers Licence

Highly desirable:

Some experience in television production, experience in factual television production preferred
Ability to speak Malay would be highly advantageous
Awareness of Muslim culture would be highly advantageous
Demonstrated ability to perform duties with minimal supervision

Learning Opportunity (relative to the existing experience of the applicant):

The opportunity to watch an experienced documentary team, and to contribute to their work.
The opportunity to read and review and possibly contribute to interview questions.
The opportunity to assist with data wrangling (depending on abilities/experience) and to view and assist with the process of selection of material, and some preliminary editing. 
Assisting with shaping the material and the process of finding the story in it.

Shoot: 19/6/17 – 14/7/17 (as at 17/3/17)

Who is it for?

Northern Territory resident writers, directors and producers who can demonstrate significant commitment to working in a related technical discipline within the screen industry, and are seeking to broaden their experience.

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the general eligibility criteria as detailed in the Screen Territory Guidelines. In addition they must:

  • be an Australian citizen and permanent resident of the Northern Territory;
  • be 18 years or over; and
  • have a valid ABN;

What to Submit

In addition to the information asked for in Grants-Tracker applicants must upload the following documents under Additional Materials:

  • A half to one page document detailing any of the highly desirable and administration skills which you may have.
  • A half to one page document detailing why you should be chosen and who it will help.
  • A current CV (including at least three references).

Assessment Criteria

  • Participants’ suitable prior industry experience
  • The ability of the applicant to fully commit to the process
  • The ability of the applicant to show they have at least two of the of highly desirable points
