Spark Short Film Initiative 2026

The SPARK Short Film Initiative returns in 2026 as one of the Northern Territory’s most anticipated programs for emerging screen talent. Delivered by Screen Territory, SPARK is designed to elevate early and mid-career filmmakers through hands-on development, industry mentorship, and a funded short film production.

This year, SPARK invites filmmakers to tackle the theme “In a Pickle”—a creative prompt that explores pressure, predicaments and the moments that reveal true character.

What is SPARK?

SPARK supports the development and production of three original short films, providing Territory creatives with the tools, guidance, and professional standards required to take the next meaningful step in their careers.
The initiative includes:

Historically delivered as part of the Darwin International Film Festival, SPARK is now administered directly by Screen Territory to strengthen the career outcomes, industry support, and production scaffolding available to successful teams.

Each selected project receives:

  • $30,000 in production funding
  • An experienced story development mentor
  • An assigned Executive Producer
  • A premium Panavision camera and lens package, including technical and creative consultation
  • Professional post-production elements, including colour grade and sound mix
  • A public premiere at a curated SPARK showcase event attended by industry guests and the broader community.

What We’re Looking For

SPARK champions bold, uplifting, and well-crafted stories that respond creatively to the theme “In a Pickle”.

Projects may be scripted or factual, but must:

  • Be no longer than 10 minutes, including credits
  • Demonstrate strong narrative clarity, originality and thoughtful character development
  • Show that the creative team has the skill and capacity to deliver a high-quality theatrical short
  • Use NT-based cast and crew (unless a pre-approved exception applies)
  • Source music from an NT musician, composer or band.

The 2026 Theme: In a Pickle

“In a Pickle” invites filmmakers to explore the art of being stuck — a pressure point, a moral crossroads, a moment where character and creativity collide.

This could be:

  • A comedic situation spiralling out of control.
  • A moral dilemma with no easy way out.
  • A psychological or emotional trap.
  • A surreal or metaphorical interpretation of being “pickled” by circumstance.

At its core, the theme is about tension, transformation and discovering knowledge in adversity.
