Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Festival session highlight

Join us for an in‑depth exploration of the hit family film Kangaroo, which became the number one Australian film at the box office in 2025 and the highest‑grossing Australian film in Germany in the past 25 years.

Produced in association with Brindle Films and Bunya Productions and distributed by STUDIOCANAL, Kangaroo is inspired by the life of Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns, founder of the Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs. This session unpacks the extraordinary journey of bringing the film to the screen from development and production through to post‑production, release and international success.

Join STUDIOCANAL CEO Australia and New Zealand, Elizabeth Trotman; Screen Territory senior director, Jennie Hughes; producer, Rachel Clements; and VFX supervisor, Jonathan Hairman, as they share the creative, cultural and logistical adventure behind making this magical family film and the collaboration that helped drive its box‑office success. Moderated by Natalie Apostolou.

The panel will also explore how Screen Territory and Tourism NT work together to maximise the impact of screen productions through location marketing, strategic partnerships and set‑jetting, driving audience reach and tourism awareness alongside box‑office success.

A must‑attend conversation on filmmaking, collaboration and showcasing the Northern Territory on the global stage on 5 February 2026, 1pm.
