Writing for TV

Screen Territory is supporting two placements for the Australian Film and Television Radio School (AFTRS) course 'Writing for TV' which is a ten-week online course.

The course is delivered online through AFTRS's Online Learning Environment (Moodle) and using Zoom video conferencing.

The course will outline the fundamentals of creating viable and original TV drama and comedy series concepts in this ten-week 100% online course. This course will guide you through the process of concept creation – from idea inception to concept presentation.

Applications must provide all submission materials stipulated below and must meet Screen Territory Terms of Trade eligibility criteria.

Course requirements

  • You will need to dedicate at least 10 hours per week to self-directed study and one two-hour online Zoom video chat session from 15 January 2024 to 24 March 2024.
  • You will also be required to devote time to TV viewing and the production of written exercises which will receive feedback from the course lecturer.

Submission materials

Submission should be made via email to Robbie Miles shortcourses@aftrs.edu.au with the subject heading: ‘Screen Territory x AFTRS - Writing a TV Series Application’.

  • A screenplay excerpt or short script (10-15 pages).
  • A one-page statement of intent outlining your motivation for joining the course and how it aligns to your career aspirations
  • A brief resume highlighting relevant experience
  • An acknowledgement of your commitment that you will attend all online sessions (7 – 9PM AEDT on Wednesdays) between 15 January 2024 to 24 March 2024 and complete all tasks set as part of the course.

Collate all documents into a single PDF for submission.

Submissions are due by: 2359hrs (ACST) on 17 December 2023.

Assessing applications

AFTRS will be assessing the applications and select two applications who are deemed most suitable to the course based on the criteria below.

Criteria

  1. The Quality of Writing Sample.
  2. The Statement of Intent.
  3. Career Development Potential.

The instructor

The upcoming course will be delivered by Australian writer and producer, Vicki Madden. Vicki has over 30 years’ experience in the television Industry both in Australia and overseas.   She has worked as Writer and Showrunner on such shows as Halifax fp (AUS), The Bill, (UK), Trial & Retribution with Lynda La Plante (UK), The Clinic (Ireland), Water Rats, Stingers (AUS) and K9 (UK) to name a few.

Vicky also co-created, co-produced and wrote for the critically acclaimed TV series, The Kettering Incident and more recently, created and wrote the highly commended Disney/STARZ/AUS Series, The Gloaming.
